On the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island is the quiet town of Franz Josef. I love stopping here for a few days when I take road trips, and while it’s a small town, there are a surprising amount of things to do.
Due to its location, Franz Josef is referred to as “glacier country,” and in the summer, there are often more tourists than residents found here. I can’t blame them, the views are utterly amazing. Oh, and the town is tiny!
I’ve traveled around the South Island extensively, and I can confidently confirm that Franz Josef is a place worthy of spending a night or two in. Over the years, I’ve been here dozens of times, and I’ve created blogs with lots of information about my favorite things to do in Franz Josef.

Franz Josef is a true gem in New Zealand, and I always look forward to staying here. There are some amazing hikes with breathtaking views, fun local activities like jade jewelry making, and of course, the opportunity to see some epic glaciers from the ground or the skies.
Every time I visit I find new things to do, so this blog is a great place to start for anyone staying in Franz Josef.
