Best Motorhome Rental Companies in New Zealand

1. Star RV

Each Star RV motorhome is comfortable for long drives
  • Price: Averages $132 NZD per day during low season, $650+ NZD per day during summer
  • Pickup locations: Auckland Airport, Christchurch Airport, Queenstown Airport
  • Types of motorhomes on offer: Motorhomes suitable for 4-6 people. All models are certified self-contained and are equipped with GPS.

Star RV is one of New Zealand’s top motorhome rental companies, and after using them for myself I was very impressed! Not only are their motorhomes high-quality and very comfortable, but they also provide excellent customer service and make it really convenient to work with. Even better, you can get an extra 5% off when you use the promo code DTRAVEL25 by booking on their website here!

They have an impressive fleet of Fiat Ducato and Mercedes Sprinter vans that come with all the extras you’ll need for a comfy road trip. It doesn’t matter exactly which model you go with, they will all be equipped with cutlery and dinnerware, bedding, blankets, pillows, a gas stove, GPS, and an extendable awning so you can be outside no matter the weather! I also love that they provide roadside assistance 24/7 and truly have your back no matter where you are.

Star RV is ideal if you’re traveling as a family or with a pet. Pets are welcome for an additional charge and they also have booster or car seats available to rent, so you don’t have to bring your own. If you’d like other camping equipment, they also have camping chairs, tables, heaters, and other tools at your disposal for a small fee. They also offer linen changes – which I was grateful for during my 2-week road trip!

Picking up and dropping off the motorhome is really simple, as they have locations at the Auckland, Christchurch, and Queenstown Airports. It’s even more convenient because they allow online check-in and “drop-and-go” check-out so you don’t have to wait around for a long time. There is also a shuttle that goes from their location to the airport during business hours for the easiest option!

Star RV offers two premium insurance coverages, just for some extra peace of mind. You can get tire, windshield, front, back, and side panel damage coverage for $45 NZD per day. They also offer all of this plus rollover damage and include amenities such as camping chairs, a booster seat, and a spare cooking gas bottle for $65 NZD per day.

I could keep going on and on about how easy and inclusive it is to book with Star RV – but I think you get the gist! They truly provide great service and comfortable vehicles at the lowest prices possible. If you’re ready to explore the beautiful corners of New Zealand, book your motorhome today! Most importantly – don’t forget to use the promo code DTRAVEL25 for an additional 5% off.

It’s important to note that no discounts or promotions will be applied for pickups from December 16, 2024 to January 19, 2025. But for the entire rest of the year, the discount is yours!

Simply click here to select your JUCY campervan, or click here to select your Star RV motorhome, and then use the code DTRAVEL25 at checkout to get 5% off – it’s that easy!

2. JUCY

Plenty of room for everyone!

I may not be a master chef, but I make some delicious camp meals!
  • Price: Averages $70 NZD per day during low season, $550+ NZD per day during summer
  • Pickup locations: Auckland Airport, Christchurch Airport, Queenstown Airport
  • Types of motorhomes on offer: 2 to 4-person self-contained and non-self-contained, all with automatic transmission

JUCY Rentals is THE premier campervan rental company in New Zealand. Their bright green vans are iconic and you can see them anywhere you travel in the country. They are also my personal favorite company when renting a campervan myself! Best of all, they offer the same promo code as Star RV – simply use the code DTRAVEL25 to get 5% off when you book here!

From their humble beginnings building custom order vans in the garage, Dan Alpe and his brother have been in the campervan industry since 2001. It’s pretty crazy to see how they’ve grown today, but they’ve made a name for themselves as the best and most affordable rental outfitters in New Zealand and Australia. They also have excellent customer service and have always kept fun, family, pride, and passion in their motto.

You can rent self-contained and non-self-contained campervans, depending on your travel itinerary. They all are equipped with cutlery, dinnerware, bedding, pillows, towels, and AA roadside assistance (phew!). For an extra charge, you can rent a roof rack, GPS, camping tables, or other amenities to make your trip a little more comfy. From my past experience, I think renting a GPS is pretty handy because some of the remote areas have poor cell service (like the road from Queenstown to Milford Sound, you don’t want to miss this drive!).

If you’re traveling with your furry friend, they are welcome in JUCY’s campervans too! They offer specific vehicles that are pet-friendly and have an additional cleaning fee.

JUCY offers three automatic campervan models:

  • The JUCY Condo comfortably sleeps 4 people, with two double beds! It’s a Toyota Hiace and is their most popular self-contained campervan. I’ve used this exact model for road trips and found it to be a very spacious van.
  • The JUCY Cruiser is another 4-person van, but it’s a bit smaller and doesn’t have the same “upstairs” section as the Condo does. This is a Fiat Ducato and is also self-contained.
  • The JUCY Crib is a 2-person budget-friendly option and is not self-contained. They actually can fit a lot of amenities into this smaller van, and I think this is a great option if you want to get off the beaten path, as it’s a smaller vehicle to drive (Toyota Estima).

JUCY has locations at the Auckland, Christchurch, and Queenstown airports. They make the process really easy, and you can even pick up at one airport and drop off at another. I’ve rented with JUCY a few times and was always impressed by their customer service and how affordable it was! You can read my full review of JUCY campervans here.

Better yet, take advantage of the promo code DTRAVEL25 and get 5% off when you book on their website. Same as with Star RV, no discounts or promotions will be applied for pickups from December 16, 2024 to January 19, 2025. But for the entire rest of the year, the discount is yours!

3. Kiwi Motorhomes

Getting a picnic table and chairs is a must for moments like these!
  • Price: Prices vary seasonally but start from $225 to $345+ NZD per day
  • Pickup locations: Auckland, Christchurch, Hamilton, Rotorua, Tauranga
  • Types of motorhomes on offer: 4-person, 5-person, and 6-person motorhomes. All are self-contained certified.

No matter where you’re traveling in New Zealand – Kiwi Motorhome is a fantastic option! They are known for their incredible service and hospitality, always treating travelers as if they were family. I love knowing my rental company has my back while I’m out traversing remote areas, so they are an easy addition to the top 5 motorhome rental companies in New Zealand.

While other renal companies are quick to charge you for extras, Kiwi Motorhomes provides a lot with their basic rentals. They recently threw in two free mountain bikes with helmets and a bike rack for my last adventure (usually those are costly additions!). They also provide child’s seats, camping chairs, a GPS, boogie boards, and more… all for free!

You can also get 5% off your booking when you use my promo code DEST5 at check out to save even more money! Check out my guide to booking a Kiwi Motorhome with the promo code here for all the details.

They provide 24/7 AA roadside assistance and even have a customer service helpline. No matter where you are or what time it is, they will help you out! This is a huge weight off your back because you never know when mechanical problems might pop up.

Kiwi Motorhomes has over 20 campervans and motorhomes to choose from, whether you’re looking for a mid-range, premium, or luxury option. They can all sleep four to six people in the queen-sized beds, and they are certified self-contained. This means you’ll have clean water, toilets, and showers in your van.

For a few more nitty-gritty details, they offer manual or automatic transmission and most of the vehicles are family friendly. They also have options for animal-friendly motorhomes, but be sure to discuss that before booking!

The exact cost of your motorhome rental varies greatly by season and what level of luxury you book. You can pick up your Kiwi Motorhome in one location and drop it off in a different location, just be sure to let them know when you book. They even offer complimentary airport shuttles – what a service! Insurance is included in the daily rate and only applies to the vehicle.

I’d highly recommend Kiwi Motorhome to families or groups of friends setting off on an epic New Zealand road trip. I’ve actually got another discount code for Kiwi Motorhomes, simply use DEST5 to get 5% off when you book here. While 5% might not sound like a lot, it can definitely add up to a couple hundred dollars that you can use elsewhere (you’re welcome!).

4. Wilderness Motorhomes

  • Price: Averages $580 NZD per day during summer, $340 per day during low season
  • Pickup Locations: Auckland, Christchurch
  • Types of Motorhomes on offer: Premium motorhomes and campervans for 2-4 people. All models are certified for freedom camping and are great for getting off the beaten path.

Are you hoping to get off the main tourist track and explore New Zealand’s vast wilderness? Well, I’m happy to tell you that you can easily do that with Wilderness Motorhomes. With locations in both Auckland and Christchurch and over 15 years of experience, this company has become a staple on the North and South Islands. They offer a range of premium motorhomes, with a variety of amenities, bed sizes, and space to accommodate your group.

Their fleet is equipped with modern vehicles that feel luxurious and also are reliable for exploring remote areas of the country. They are all self-contained and make freedom camping easy! You’ll find fixed beds, a full bathroom, a kitchen, comfortable bedding, full insulation and central heating, tons of storage space, and an automatic transmission. This truly is one of the most luxurious motorhome companies out there!

They also can provide an array of extras for an additional charge, such as a bike rack, Wi-Fi, camping chairs and tables, a barbecue grill, snow chains, and even ferry tickets. Adding these extras is easy, you simply select what you’d like thrown in when you book your motorhome. They also offer free airport transfers at the start and end of your trip.

I like how they offer a variety of layouts, whether you want a double bed and a compact vehicle or a luxurious king-size bed and a little bit more room. The vehicles range from 2-4 people. Prices fluctuate by season but start around $340 NZD per day during low season, and can reach $580-$600+ NZD during the busy summer months.

One of my favorite aspects of Wilderness Motorhomes is that they encourage travelers to get off the beaten path and even off-road a bit. Many other companies don’t really encourage it because it can be hard on the vehicles, but Wilderness Motorhomes ensures their fleet can handle the bumpy road. They are true to their name! However, be sure to use care and not damage the vehicle while out adventuring.

They will even share some secret camping spots with their customers! Ones that only locals know about, so you can find some hidden gems while you’re out exploring.

5. Maui Motorhomes

  • Price: Averages $465+ NZD per day during summer, $140 NZD per day during low season
  • Pickup Locations: Queenstown, Christchurch Airport, Auckland Airport
  • Types of Motorhomes on offer: Self-contained, automatic motorhomes that comfortably fit 2-6 people.

Maui Motorhomes is one of the oldest in the business, serving New Zealand’s travel market for over 35 years! Famous for luxury and comfort, you’ll be having a relaxing holiday when you rent through Maui.

Maui Motorhomes is owned by the same company as Britz, Tourism Holdings Ltd. (THL), which is one of the most reputable tourism companies in New Zealand. They have a wide variety of motorhomes available, all designed to have lots of storage and with accessories to make your journey as comfortable as possible!

All of the vehicles are self-contained, automatic, and under 2.5 years old – guaranteed! Smaller models can fit two people, but they also offer larger models that sleep six people. Bring the whole family on this adventure!

They also come with a GPS, luxury linen and bedding, a gas stove, a microwave, a fridge, and a TV with a DVD player! You’ll also find a shower and toilet, and an 82-97 liter fresh water tank (depending on which model you choose). Some motorhomes come with an awning, fly screens, and are equipped for child/booster seats. They really have thought of it all!

But if you are missing something, you can also purchase extra items when you’re reserving the motorhome, or when you go pick it up. The exact cost of your motorhome rental will depend on which type you go with, what features you choose to add, and how long you’ll be traveling for.

Maui (and also Britz) requires you to download the THL Roadtrip app, and I am actually glad they do! It has tips, tutorials, and instructions that might be helpful while you’re on the road. You can self-check in to pick up your motorhome and you can drop it off at a different office than you picked it up at. This is perfect if you’re embarking on a road trip, that way you don’t have to backtrack.

You can call Maui 24/7, but their office is open every day during regular business hours. And if you need a ride to the airport, you can schedule it with the specific pick-up/drop-off offices!
