How to Spend ONE Day in Rotorua: A 24-Hour Itinerary

Do you have just one day in Rotorua? You might be wondering how you’ll fit the best sights and activities into a short 24-hour itinerary. Don’t worry though, I’ve got you covered!

I’ve spent a lot of time in Rotorua and have sorted out the top activities, enough to jam-pack a 1-day itinerary! If you’re excited to explore Rotorua’s geothermal activity, outdoor adventures, and Maori culture – you’ll get it all in this blog.

So even if you’re passing through on a road trip or using Rotorua as a hub for other adventures, you’ll see the best of the best if you follow this itinerary. Let’s get into it!

1 Day in Rotorua

Breakfast – Ciabatta Cafe and Bakery

Ciabatta Cafe and Bakery!

You can still see the best of Rotorua in a quick 1-day trip, so we are starting off with the most important part – breakfast! Rotorua is known for having a wide array of restaurant options, but my favorite breakfast spot is Ciabatta Cafe and Bakery. This is more of a local spot with a cozy charm and even better food.

As you can guess from the name, they are famous for their Ciabatta bread sandwiches. They also have plenty of baked goods, so whether you’re in a sweet or savory mood you’ll find something tasty. For breakfast, you’ll love the Brekkie sandwich. Although I think their Reuben sandwich is one of the best I’ve ever had, eating a Reuben for breakfast is perfectly acceptable!

If you’re in a sweet mood be sure to try the donuts to pair with your coffee. What better combo is there? Ciabatta Cafe is popular amongst locals, so try to get there around 8:30-9 before it gets too busy. They are open from 8 am to 3 pm Tuesday to Saturday, and close at 2 on Saturdays.

Morning – Visit one of the thermal parks

Sulfur lake at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland in Rotorua, New Zealand
Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

Rotorua is one of the most unique cities in New Zealand because of the massive amounts of geothermal activity around. So instead of hitting an amusement park, you can hit a geothermal park for another sort of adventure! There are quite a few options around Rotorua, but they aren’t the cheapest activity out there. I suggest visiting just one while you’re in town and you’ll get the full effect!

Below are the top three geothermal parks in Rotorua, and they are all a bit different. So you can choose whichever is best for you!

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is the least expensive geothermal park around Rotorua and is just about a 20-minute drive from the city center. It sits on the north side of a collapsed volcano crater and is home to some truly unique sights. Entrance tickets are $45 NZD per adult and $15 NZD per child.

This park has the largest mud pool in New Zealand and also the Lady Knox Geyser! The geyser erupts daily at 10:15 am and water can spray 10-20 meters (33-65 feet) in the air. It’s quite the sight! Some great walking paths weave through the park, so you can see all the sulfur lakes, smaller geysers, colorful hot springs, steaming ground, and other geothermal natural wonders.

I like that they offer both guided tours and the option to explore on your own. There are three different paths so you can wander around for a while! If you’re keen on learning more about this unique area, I recommend taking the guided tour.

Te Puia

Te Puia Pōhutu Geyser in Rotorua, New Zealand

Te Puia Thermal Wonderland is an even more fascinating geothermal park because it’s one of the last two remaining geyser fields in its natural state – in the entire world! It’s big too, stretching 60 hectares in the Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley. This one is even more famous because the Pōhutu Geyser is located here, which is the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere.

Conveniently, Te Puia is only a 5-minute drive from Rotorua! You have to join a guided tour to explore this park, but I honestly am okay with that because there’s a ton to learn here. A general guided tour is $95 NZD per adult and $47 NZD per child – I told you these parks weren’t cheap! But, they are truly worth the money with all the cool sights you’ll see and the guides are awesome at explaining the history and science behind this place.

If you want to take your experience further, you can also add a Haka performance, a traditional Hangi meal, or visit the Conservation Center onsite. Te Puia Thermal Wonderland is open daily from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

Hell’s Gate

Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve in Rotorua, New Zealand

Last but certainly not least (it’s actually my favorite choice!) is Hell’s Gate! Don’t worry, this park isn’t as daunting as the name makes it sound. Hell’s Gate is home to the only geothermal mud bath that you can swim in, in all of New Zealand! If this is high on your bucket list, be sure to visit this geothermal park during your 1-day in Rotorua.

Historically, Maori warriors used this mud bath to heal their wounds. Today it’s available for all visitors to enjoy the mineral-rich waters and it will make your skin feel amazing after! The park is situated between Lake Rotorua and Lake Rotoiti, giving it all the geothermal life like mud volcanoes and a massive hot waterfall. This place also inspired dozens of myths and legends, and when you see it for yourself you’ll think it’s out of a fairytale!

I recommend booking a tour before you go, as this place is very popular. There’s even more to explore in the park than just the mud baths, so I loved this combo tour of Hell’s Gate. It includes a geothermal walk, a lesson in carving traditional the Maori way, and an hour soal in the mud and sulfur water! The tour is $105 NZD and will last about 3 hours – the best way to spend your morning if you ask me!

Lunch – Pig & Whistle, Historic Pub

If you like history, hearty food, or a yummy pint of beer after a morning of exploring, you’ll love The Pig & Whistle Historic Pub! Not only do I love the food here, but the building is so beautiful and has been a staple in Rotorua’s downtown scene since 1940. It was actually built as the old police station!

The architecture of this pub is really beautiful, combining traditionally styled Maori designs and the functionality of a police station – like ultra-thick walls.

The food is even better than its aesthetic, which is what you want in a lunch spot right? They make classic NZ pies and other filling dishes like big juicy burgers, fish & chips, lamb shank, brisket, and more! They also have a full bar, so this is the perfect time to try some local craft beer or grab a cocktail for an afternoon treat. You’re on vacation after all!

The Pig & Whistle is open daily from 11:30 am to 10:30 or later.

Afternoon – Whitewater rafting or go ziplining

There are two iconic Rotorua activities for this afternoon’s activity and you can choose which one best suits your adventure style. Whitewater rafting is famous in Rotorua, and this is the most thrilling of the two activities. If you want something fun but a little less intense, you can join a zipline tour! Both of these activities take about 3 hours and I’ll list all the details below.

Whitewater rafting

Whitewater rafting on the Caituna river in Rotorua, New Zealand
What a drop!

For adventurous travelers like myself, you can’t miss whitewater rafting in Rotorua! You’ll raft down the Kaituna River, home to Tutea Falls. The is famous for being the highest commercially rafted fall in the world, so you can go over a 7-meter (23-foot) drop! Now that’s something to brag about when you’re back at home after your New Zealand vacation.

With a title such as this, you know there are multiple rafting companies to choose from. However, I recommend taking this top-rated rafting tour – it’s easily the best option in Rotorua! The tour is only 2.5 hours in total, so it’s easy to fit into this 1-day itinerary. You’ll start by going over some easy rapids on the river, then before you know it you’ll be tipping over the falls!

I was very impressed by my river guides when I took this tour. They have done it hundreds of times and know how to make this waterfall drop thrilling yet safe! For those who are looking for even more exhilaration, you can go cliff jumping afterward and soar off a 3-meter (10-foot) cliff.

This tour meets 20 minutes from Rotorua, and if you don’t have transportation you can arrange pick-up for an extra fee. They provide a helmet, safety equipment, and the raft – no BYOR (bring your own raft)! You can also buy photos taken after the tour to remember this epic adventure.

All in all, you’ll have about one hour on the river. This tour costs $115 NZD and there are multiple departure times throughout the day, but be sure to select an afternoon tour for this itinerary. I also suggest booking this tour in advance, as it’s really popular and often sells out weeks beforehand.

Ziplining

So much fun!

Woohoo!

Another top-rated option for your afternoon activity is ziplining! This zipline tour has over 4,000 5-star reviews (see them here!), so I don’t even need to tell you how epic this experience is. But, of course, I will – because it’s seriously fun!

This six-zipline course starts out 21 meters (72 feet) up in the trees, and you’ll soar over the beautiful 500-year-old forest. Not only is this an exciting activity, but it’s really scenic too. I’ve been ziplining all over the world and this is one of the best tours I’ve ever done. The views, paired with the exciting course, and the super friendly staff made for a fantastic experience all around.

There is also a 220-meter (722-foot) zipline and a series of suspension bridges to walk on as you move about the platforms. The tour includes transportation from Rotorua, all safety equipment, and photos from your adventure! You can book this tour for $179 NZD and I recommend reserving your spot in advance – this is a very popular tour.

Why I Book Tours on Viator

Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! I almost always book all of my tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:

  • Free cancellation on most tours – Most of the tours on Viator allow you to cancel and get a full refund up to 24 hours in advance. This is handy in case plans change, or if booking an outdoor activity, the weather forecast is looking grim.
  • Reserve now and pay later – You can secure your spot on some of the most popular tours well in advance and not pay until closer to the day of the tour.
  • Pay in your chosen currency – Avoid costly international transaction fees by choosing to pay in your home currency.
  • Peace of mind – When booking with tour operators you find in person on the street or in small booking offices, you are often promised one thing and given another. This online platform holds tour operators accountable with a written description of inclusions as well as the opportunity for customers to leave reviews.

Dinner/Night – Māori cultural experience

The Maori Experience in Rotorua, New Zealand
Learning about this amazing culture should be at the top of your bucket list!

We are going to hit all of Rotorua’s highlights in one day! This city is famous for geothermal wonders, adventure-filled activities, and Maori culture – so we’ve got one more thing to check off our list today. Rotorua is home to a large Maori population, so this is the best spot in the country to dive into the history and heritage. You can do so by visiting a traditional-style village for a cultural experience – they are so much fun!

One of the most popular experiences is spending the evening at Te Pā Tū village, located just outside of Rotorua. This three-hour tour starts with a Powhiri welcome ceremony, followed by demonstrations of daily life, tools, and games from traditionally dressed warriors. We saw a Haka performance (a style of dance) and enjoyed a Hangi feast, which was cooked in an underground oven. Who knew food cooked underground could be so tasty, I still think about that slow-roasted meat and veggies!

I think this is an essential addition to your Rotorua itinerary – even with just one day. This tour is $260 NZD and is totally worth the cost if you ask me!

Another great option is this cultural experience at the Mitai Maori Village. It’s quite similar to the tour mentioned prior, but you’ll see different types of performances here.

When I first arrived at this village, I was greeted by warriors paddling an ancient-styled canoe down the river, then saw weaponry displays, and some amazing dances (I was seriously impressed by the haka and poi dances!). This village tour also takes you on a glow worm bush walk and to see the fish in Fairy Spring. Honestly, I think this cultural experience is a bit more unique!

This tour is $155 NZD and includes a Hangi feast and all your activities. They also provide transportation from Rotorua.

Where to Stay in Rotorua

Room with a great view at Rydges Rotorua, New Zealand

Even with just two days in Rotorua, you’ll want to find the best accommodation for you! What’s great about this area is all the choices for accommodations – whether you are backpacking on a budget or looking for a luxurious place to call home for a few nights. These are my top picks for every budget!

Rydges Rotorua – $$$

For a more luxurious stay, Rydges Rotorua offers a scenic view and a relaxing atmosphere located on the edge of Redwoods Forest and overlooking the Whakarewarewa Geothermal Reserve and Historical Village.

Choose between a superior or deluxe room, which each features air conditioning, comfy beds, and cable TV with free movies. If you’re looking for something a little extra, you can book a private suite instead. Accommodation rates start from $242 NZD per night.

Start your morning with a visit to the on-site gym or a swim in the heated outdoor swimming pool. You can also drop by the hotel’s award-winning restaurant and bar that offers modern New Zealand cuisine. Then, spend the day exploring the mountains by bike. If you bring your own mountain bike, they have secure storage for it inside the hotel and a bike washing station.

Anything for the little ones? Yes! Rydges Rotorua houses a Play Zone with various games for children of all ages, including table tennis, foosball, Nintendo Switch, air hockey, and more. Check availability and book your stay on Booking.com.

Thermal Oak Motel – $$

If more rooms and spacious accommodations are what you’re looking for, you’ll find them at the Thermal Oak Motel. The motel offers modern suites and high-quality units with free parking and Wi-Fi. The choices range from deluxe studios to a three-bedroom flat house, with rates from $180 NZD up to $600 NZD per night.

All accommodations are complete with air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, a fully-equipped kitchenette and a large modern bathroom with a walk-in shower. There’s also a dining area available in most of the rooms, including the executive two-bedroom unit (which also has a private outdoor spa pool).

Besides the rooms, you can go for a dip in one of the two public mineral spa pools. Another advantage is the convenient access to the city center, which is only a 10-minute walk away. This means you can enjoy the activities and sights of Rotorua downtown anytime you please. Reserve your room on Booking.com.

Rock Solid Backpackers Rotorua – $

Rock Solid Backpackers Rotorua is one of the budget-friendly hotels centrally located in the city within walking distance of many Rotorua attractions. It is a perfect fit for travelers with a tight budget where rooms in a shared dorm of four to eight people start at only $27 NZD per night. If you don’t want to share, there are private rooms available as well around the $100 NZD mark.

You can save money on meals by using the communal kitchen here complete with cooking facilities and there’s a spacious guest lounge where you can hang out. If you’re in the mood for a more challenging activity, head to the 20-meter (65-foot) rock-climbing wall next door which offers guests staying here a discounted rate.

Another convenience at the hostel is the on-site tour desk. There you can inquire and ask for help as you organize your Rotorua activities for the day.

You can easily book a room on Hostelworld.com or Booking.com.

Renting a Car, Campervan, or Motorhome in New Zealand

JUCY is one of my favorite campervan rental companies (read below for a discount code!)

I also really like Mad Campers!

Let’s face it, you’re going to need wheels to get around New Zealand. Although a small country, buses between destinations are infrequent and expensive. Plus, some of the best experiences you can have in NZ are on road trips!

You have three options when it comes to getting wheels in New Zealand; a car, a campervan, or a motorhome. Here’s what you need to know about each and where to get them:

  • Car – A normal car is the cheapest rental vehicle you can get in New Zealand. It’ll get you around to all of the best destinations with ease. The only downside to a car is that you will need to stay in hotels or Airbnbs during your travels (no camping.) The easiest place to rent a car in New Zealand is on Discover Cars where you can compare cars, companies, prices, features, and more very easily.
  • Campervan – A Campervan is a large van that has a bed and a small kitchen in the back. It’s what most budget travelers use for traveling around New Zealand since it allows you to camp comfortably and for free (most) nights. Campervans are best for couples or solo travelers who are happy to live in a small space. You should also love the outdoors and camping…and be prepared for an adventure of a lifetime! My favorite campervan rental company is JUCY because they have a huge selection of campervans to choose from, plus multiple pick-up/drop-off locations. You can browse JUCY’s campervan selection online here. Alternatively, you can easily compare all campervans available in NZ on Motorhome Republic here.

EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNT CODE: I’ve managed to snag a discount code for 5% off for my readers if you book your campervan or motorhome through JUCY or Star RV! Simply click here to select your JUCY campervan, or click here to select your Star RV motorhome, and then use the code DTRAVEL25 at checkout to get 5% off – it’s that easy!

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

If you’re looking to save money on travel insurance, I currently use and recommend SafetyWing. I’ve been using their coverage since 2018 and they’ve had my back when I needed emergency flights and got sick overseas.

SafetyWing is one of the cheapest providers out there and covers everything from medical costs to lost luggage, travel delays, and emergency flights. A huge difference I’ve found between them and other companies is that they let you take out a policy AFTER leaving your home country. I’ve also found it handy that it’s a monthly payment rather than a lump sum and you get a refund for unused time.

SafetyWing has helped me out in some scary situations before and their affordable coverage has given me peace of mind. Read my full review on if you should get travel insurance in NZ for more info!
