Quick Pick: My Top Choice

This is the hotel and area I loved the most and suggest booking ASAP!
My personal FAVORITE part of Waiheke Island to stay is Oneroa! Itās close to beautiful beaches, great restaurants, and the ferry!
I recommend staying at Watermark Apartments for its stunning views over Oneroa Bay, cozy apartments, and thoughtful little extras!
Overview of the Best Areas to Stay on Waiheke Island

Waiheke doesnāt have much accommodation, and the good places book up quickly in summer. If you already know your dates, I suggest booking early, especially if youāre set on a specific area or hotel.
Getting around is pretty easy too. If you want to explore at your own pace, e-bikes are a great option, but if you donāt feel like cycling, the public buses are easy to use. Just tap on and off with a contactless debit or credit card or smart device, or use an AT HOP Card.
- Oneroa – Best for first-time visitors – If you want to be close to the beach, restaurants, shops, and the ferry, this is just the place. My favorite stay here is Watermark Apartments, an adults-only hotel ideal for peaceful vacations yet not far from the action.
- Onetangi / Central Waiheke – Best for beaches and wineries – This part of the island is a great choice if you want a relaxing stay with a long beach and wineries, but youāll need to plan your transport. If you want to stay right by the beach without spending a fortune, Onetangi Beach Apartments are a convenient choice.
Important Tip
Multiple Waiheke Island trips have taught me that this island doesnāt reward spontaneity when it comes to planning. The good places get snapped up months in advance, leaving overpriced, underwhelming options for last-minute travelers.
The sweet spot for booking Waiheke Island accommodations is 3-4 months outāenough time to secure good rates without locking in plans too far in advance.
Where to Stay on Waiheke Island
Oneroa

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS
Pros
- Close to the ferry
- Lots of bars and restaurants
- Easy to get around with most places within easy reach
Cons
- Can feel a bit touristy
- Parking can be tricky when itās busy
- More traffic and noise than in the quieter parts of the island
If itās your first time on Waiheke, Oneroa is definitely the easiest and most convenient base. Youāve got the beach, restaurants, cafes, galleries, and shops all within easy reach, and the Matiatia ferry terminal is only about 2 km (around 1.2 miles) away. So once you get off the ferry from Auckland, you wonāt have far to go. Buses also run from here to other parts of the island, which makes getting around a lot easier if youāre not renting a car.
I especially like this area because there are a ton of places to stay, from beachfront guesthouses to larger resorts. Basically, thereās something for every budget and style.
One of the best things to do here is spend time at Oneroa Beach, which is great for swimming and kayaking. Then you have Little Oneroa, which is perfect for a family beach day, with a playground and a local fish-and-chip spot.
The area is also home to the Waiheke Community Art Gallery and Waiheke Musical Museum if you want to do something other than lie in the sun. Youāll also find plenty of places to eat and grab a coffee along Ocean View Road, with many spots offering views over the Pacific Ocean.
The downside is that it can get pretty busy, especially on summer weekends, and accommodation tends to be more expensive. But for the location, itās really worth it!
The Moorings Studio Apartments – $$$

If youāre looking to splash out, The Moorings Studio Apartments is definitely worth checking out! Itās super convenient if youāre looking for an easy location, as itās close to the ferry terminal, and you can catch a bus from there to Oneroa or walk if you prefer, since itās only about 15 minutes on foot. You can also rent a car or bike if you want to explore more of the island.
The studio apartments have a fully equipped kitchenette, which is great if you love cooking, but the best part is the private deck with sea views. You can even spot birdlife from there! Thereās also outdoor seating with a fireplace, a cozy spot to slow down at night. Prices typically start at $500 NZD per night, depending on the studio and your travel dates.
If The Moorings Studio Apartments is fully booked Waiheke Waterfront Lodge is a great alternative, just steps from Little Oneroa Beach and perfect if youāre into water sports. They also offer a paid shuttle service, a tour desk, live music, and a two-course gourmet breakfast.
I also love Wild Thyme with a lovely deck and great views. Location is a big bonus, just a 15-minute drive into town, with easy access to the coastline and lots of wineries.
Watermark Apartments – $$

If youāre looking for a relaxing vacation, Watermark Apartments is perfect! Itās an adults-only aparthotel, with a terrace or patio plus kitchenettes for simple meals. Thereās also BBQ equipment if you are craving burgers.
This was my stay, and I absolutely loved the view over Oneroa Bay. It was spectacular! Marina took amazing care of us, and I loved the little extras, especially the chocolates beside the bed and the complimentary bottle of wine waiting for me when I arrived. It really did feel like staying in someoneās home.
Location-wise, itās just a short walk from Little Oneroa Beach. However, it sits on the top of a steep hill, so walking into town isnāt a great idea. We had a car, but you can also have the hosts book a taxi for you. Prices start at around $380 NZD per night, which I think is a pretty sweet deal for the location.
Alternatively, Hampton Court offers a cozy adults-only stay with spacious apartments and free private parking. Itās also within easy walking distance of Oneroa and the ferry terminal, so you can get around without really needing a car.
Kiwi House Waiheke – $

If youāre trying to cut costs, Kiwi House Waiheke is our favorite budget stay on Waiheke. Itās a small guesthouse with just a handful of rooms, and you can even rent the whole place if youāre traveling with a big group or planning a wedding. The rooms are simple but modern, with a relaxed coastal feel and everything you need.
The best part is the shared breakfast. The hosts have everything ready in the morning, from freshly baked goods and muesli in mason jars to toast, cheese, and more. Thereās also a shared kitchen if you want to make something yourself.
Outside, youāll find cozy seating and picnic space where you can sit with a coffee. I also love the location, just a 5-minute walk from Little Oneroa Beach and close to Oneroa Village. At around $190 NZD a night, we think itās a real steal for Waiheke.
Central Waiheke

BEST FOR BEACHES & WINERIES
Pros
- Home to Onetangi Beach and lots of wineries
- Quieter than Oneroa
Cons
- Youāll need a car or a bus to get around
- Not as many restaurants and shops as Oneroa
If you want to stay somewhere a little quieter than Oneroa, Onetangi and Central Waiheke are definitely worth checking out. This part of the island is more spread out too, so you canāt really explore it all on foot. Youāll find Onetangi Beach, vineyards, restaurants, and a mix of accommodation around Onetangi, Palm Beach, Ostend, and Surfdale.
Onetangi Beach is the main attraction here. It stretches about 2 km (1.2 miles), so thereās usually plenty of space to find your own spot. The vineyards are another big draw, and you can use the Waiheke Hop-On Hop-Off Explorer Bus to visit some wineries.
If you want something different from the beach and wine, Whakanewha Regional Park is a great option, especially if you love hiking. Walk the Nikau Track if you can! You can also visit Ostend Market on the weekend and mingle with the locals.
The real trade-off is that everything is more spread out, so you will need a car or a stay near a bus stop. But if youāre mainly here for the beach and wine, this part of Waiheke is really hard to beat.
Waiheke Island Vineyard Holiday Houses – $$$

If you want somewhere with a bit more character, keep Waiheke Island Vineyard Holiday Houses on your list. This house has a rustic feel, with lots of outdoor space, barbecue facilities, a tennis court, a winery and some absolutely amazing views.
The location is hard to beat too, especially if youāre coming over on the Kennedy Point Ferry, which is only about a 2-minute drive away. If youāre coming from Auckland, the passenger ferry arrives at Matiatia Wharf, about a 10-minute drive away. Best of all, Oneroaās shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants are a quick drive away, too!
Thereās also complimentary wine tasting; they even produce honey on the property. And the food is something else too, with a restaurant serving French and local dishes for lunch. Prices range from around $400 to $500+ NZD per night, depending on the season and room.
Onetangi Beach Apartments – $$

If youāre looking for great value close to the beach, Onetangi Beach Apartments are definitely worth considering. Theyāre right across the road from Onetangi Beach, with three restaurants just around the corner. Getting around is easy too, with a nearby bus stop for the Hop-On Hop-Off tour, a small grocery store less than a 10-minute walk away, and a fish-and-chips shop directly across the street.
The apartments are spacious and quiet, and some have fully equipped modern kitchens (if you like cooking while traveling, you know what a blessing this is!). There are also beachfront BBQ facilities if you feel like cooking burgers on the beach (why wouldnāt you?).
The location is spot on if you want to spend your days at the beach or explore nearby vineyards. Prices start from around $270 NZD per night, although they may be higher during peak season.
If Onetangi Beach Apartments is sold out, Waiheke Island Resort offers plenty of useful facilities, including free parking, laundry machines, a pool, spa, and a deck with outdoor furniture. Itās a 10-minute drive from Waiheke Island Ferry Terminal, close to Palm Beach, and a 35-minute ferry ride from central Auckland.
Le Chalet Waiheke Apartments – $

Le Chalet Waiheke Apartments is a budget-friendly boutique stay overlooking Anzac Bay. I love it for the upscale extras, including a solar-heated infinity pool, therapeutic spa hot tub, and landscaped lawns. The outdoor area is also a great spot to chill after a day exploring Waiheke.
From here, Ostend village, a Woolworths supermarket, and major bus stops are all less than a 10-minute walk away. Better yet, the 50A and 50B buses run every 15 minutes, so you can get to places like the Waiheke Museum, Oyster Inn, and Tantalus Estate without renting a car.
The apartments are cozy, spacious, and modern, ranging from small studios to two-bedroom apartments for families and larger groups, so they cater to almost everyone. Prices start at around $200 NZD per night.
Another good budget option is Palm Beach Waiheke Tranquil B&B, with family rooms, a child-friendly buffet, tennis hire, and outdoor seating. Palm Beach is just a 16-minute walk away, so you can go swimming, snorkeling, hiking, and cycling without much hassle.

Renting a Car, Campervan, or Motorhome in New Zealand

Let’s face it, you’re going to need wheels to get around New Zealand. Although a small country, buses between destinations are infrequent and expensive. Plus, some of the best experiences you can have in NZ are on road trips!
You have three options when it comes to getting wheels in New Zealand: a car, a campervan, or a motorhome. Here’s what you need to know about each and where to get them:
Car
A normal car is the cheapest rental vehicle you can get in New Zealand. It’ll get you around to all of the best destinations with ease. The only downside to a car is that you will need to stay in hotels or Airbnbs during your travels (no camping, unless you buy a tent!). My favorite place to rent a car in New Zealand is Snap Rentals. They are a local company that offers affordable and high-quality rental vehicles across the country. Plus, I have an exclusive discount that gets you 10% off when you book through this link or use the code MQD10 at checkout! And if you can’t find what you’re looking for on Snap Rentals, check out Discover Cars, where you can compare cars and prices across many different companies.
Campervan
A Campervan is a large van that has a bed and a small kitchen in the back. It’s what most budget travelers use for traveling around New Zealand since it allows you to camp comfortably and for free (most) nights. Campervans are best for couples or solo travelers who are happy to live in a small space. You should also love the outdoors and camping…and be prepared for an adventure of a lifetime! My favorite campervan rental company is JUCY because they have a huge selection of campervans to choose from, plus multiple pick-up/drop-off locations. You can browse JUCY’s campervan selection online here. Alternatively, you can easily compare all campervans available in NZ on Motorhome Republic here.
Motorhome
A motorhome is larger and more comfortable than a campervan. Many motorhomes will comfortably sleep 6 or more people – perfect for a family visiting New Zealand. Motorhomes are the most expensive option, but with one, you won’t ever need to stay in a hotel, and you’ll save money that way. My top choice for a motorhome company is Star RV because they have beautiful motorhomes at affordable prices. You can check prices and availability for Star RV motorhomes online here. Alternatively, you can use Motorhome Republic to search all motorhomes in NZ. For more detailed info, read my complete guide to renting a motorhome in New Zealand!

AIRALO e-SIM Up To 15% Off With Code “DTRAVEL15”
Whatās an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country youāre visiting ā no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.
In simple terms, itās the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.
Weāve tested a bunch of eSIMs in North America, and after a few frustrating experiences, weāve found our favorite ā Airalo. Itās fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
š„ Hot Tip: Choose the Oceania-wide eSIM! It works across 8 countries, so you can hop from New Zealand to Australia to Fiji without ever losing connection. One download, endless adventures.
Bonus: Weāve got an exclusive 15% discount for our readers. Use the codes:
