Things to do in Wanaka
1. Bike along the Wanaka and Hawea Trails
Tour Details
Thereās something about Wanaka that makes you want to get outside immediately, and this 4-hour bike hire is one of the best ways to explore the area while still covering a surprising amount of ground, especially if itās your first day in town.
After a comfortable shuttle ride from Wanaka to Lake HÄwea, everything is set up for you before you even hop on a bike. The team walks you through the route, gives a safety briefing, and makes sure your bike or e-bike fits perfectly before you set off. From there, the day is yours.
The ride follows grade-one and grade-two trails, making it family-friendly and relaxed, with long scenic stretches alongside the HÄwea and Clutha Rivers. Youāll pedal through wide-open plateaus, mountain backdrops, and quiet riverside paths that show off just how beautiful this part of the South Island really is.
What makes this tour especially great is the flexibility. You can ride at your own pace, stop whenever something catches your eye, and take breaks as you go. One of the must-stop spots along the way is the Albert Town patisserie, an award-winning bakery known for its flaky pastries, great coffee, and riverside setting that makes it hard to leave.
With a helmet, trunk bag, lock, and all essentials included, plus bike pickup back in Wanaka, itās an easy, low-stress adventure that helps you get your bearings while soaking up the scenery. It’s worth noting that biking around Wanaka is a popular activity, so it’s in your best interest to reserve your bike in advance so it’s not sold out when you get there!
2. Try a waterfall Via Ferrata
Tour Details
Some adventures stay with you long after youāve left Wanaka, and this guided waterfall climb is one of them. If youāre looking to push your comfort zone and experience something truly unforgettable, this tour delivers from the very first step.
This small-group waterfall climbing tour takes you up the highest waterfall cable climb in the world, following a via ferrata-style route that winds alongside thundering waterfalls and up sheer rock faces. Youāll climb steel ladders, cross narrow suspension bridges, and steadily work your way higher as the views become more dramatic with every section.
No prior climbing experience is needed. Your professional guide is right there the entire time, providing a full safety briefing, expert instruction, and encouragement when you need it most.
Located on a private working deer farm just 20 minutes from Wanaka, the setting alone feels special. The clean mountain air, rushing water, and wide-open alpine views create an atmosphere thatās both exhilarating and rewarding. Midway through the climb, youāll stop to enjoy a picnic lunch beside the falls, giving you a moment to catch your breath and take it all in before continuing upward.
What makes this tour stand out is the balance between challenge and support. With top-quality gear, meticulous safety standards, and small group sizes, you get personal attention without feeling rushed. Itās no surprise this experience consistently earns five-star reviews from travelers who walk away buzzing with adrenaline and a huge sense of accomplishment.
3. Hike Royās Peak
Easily one of the most photogenic spots on the South Island, Royās Peak Track is likely already familiar from your Instagram feed. That iconic ridgeline overlooking Lake Wanaka is every bit as impressive in person, and hiking to the top is one of the most rewarding free things to do in Wanaka. If youāre planning to tackle it yourself, Iāve also put together a detailed guide on how to hike Royās Peak with everything you need to know before you go.
The hike starts from the car park on Mount Aspiring Road, just 10 minutes from Wanaka, making it surprisingly accessible despite the epic views. From the car park, the trail climbs steadily for 8 kilometers (5 miles) each way and takes around 6ā7 hours round trip, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. I made it up in just over six hours, mostly because I was determined to reach the viewpoint for that classic photo.
From the lookout, youāre rewarded with sweeping 180-degree views over Lake Wanaka, the snow-capped Southern Alps, and Mount Aspiring National Park in the distance. While the track itself is fairly steep and doesnāt offer much variety on the way up, itās wide, well-maintained, and easy to follow. Bring plenty of water and snacks, and dress in layers. Itās often chilly at the start, but youāll warm up quickly once the climb gets going.
In the busy summer months, expect crowds and even a short wait at the lookout for photos. Parking at the trailhead fills up quickly, too, so arriving early or later in the evening is your best bet. For a quieter experience and an equally impressive view, continue another 30 minutes past the main lookout to the summit. Just note the track closes annually from October 1 to November 10 for lambing season, and winter hikers should bring crampons and proper alpine gear.
4. Get your adrenaline pumping on a jet boating adventure
Tour Details
If youāre short on time but still want a serious dose of adrenaline, this jet boat ride on the Clutha River is an absolute must. Fast, fun, and packed with scenery, itās one of the most exciting ways to experience Wanaka from the water.
This small-group jet boat tour takes you racing along the wide, electric-blue Clutha River as it winds through the stunning Upper Clutha Valley. Flanked by glacial terraces, native bush, and towering peaks of the Southern Alps, the scenery is just as impressive as the ride itself. Your expert driver combines high-speed runs with thrilling 360-degree spins and tight switchback corners, all while keeping the experience smooth and fun for riders of all ages.
What makes this tour even better is the added storytelling along the way. Between bursts of speed, your guide shares fascinating insights into the regionās gold-mining history and the natural forces that shaped this powerful river. There are also plenty of camera stops built in, giving you time to soak up the views and snap photos you wouldnāt get from the road.
Because the tour is short and efficiently run, itās easy to fit into almost any itinerary, whether youāre squeezing it in between hikes or looking for a fun afternoon activity. With personalized attention in a small group and convenient pickup from Albert Town or central Wanaka, itās a hassle-free adventure that shows you parts of the South Island you simply canāt reach any other way.
5. Ride horses through Wanakaās wilderness
Tour Details
If youāve ever wanted to experience New Zealandās high country the way early settlers once did, this Cardrona horse-riding tour is an unforgettable way to do it. Scenic, immersive, and rich with history, it offers a completely different perspective on the landscapes surrounding Wanaka.
This small-group trek takes you deep into the Cardrona Valley on winding mountain trails that pass through a working cattle farm, across rugged terrain, and through flowing river crossings. As you ride higher into the mountains, panoramic views open up in every direction, showcasing the raw beauty of this region. Along the way, your knowledgeable guide shares stories from the 19th-century gold rush, bringing the areaās history to life as you follow routes once used by miners and settlers.
One of the highlights of the ride is the stop at the iconic Cardrona Hotel, where youāll enjoy a complimentary drink and a chance to soak up the atmosphere of one of New Zealandās most famous historic pubs. The return journey follows the Cardrona River, with plenty of opportunities for trotting and cantering, making this a rewarding experience for confident riders who are comfortable spending time in the saddle.
With its small-group setting, knowledgeable guides, and incredible scenery, this ride has racked up countless five-star reviews from travelers who say itās one of the most memorable things they did near Wanaka.
6. Sip your way around Wanaka
For such a small town, Wanaka punches well above its weight when it comes to locally crafted wine, beer, and spirits. Whether youāre winding down after a big hike or simply looking for a laid-back afternoon activity, sipping your way around Wanaka is one of the easiest ways to slow the pace and enjoy the region.
Wine is the star here, and Rippon is easily the most iconic winery in Wanaka. Set right on the edge of Lake Wanaka, itās as famous for its views as it is for its wines. Even if youāre not a wine expert, tasting here feels special. For something more central, the Maude Wines Tasting Room is a great option in town, offering an approachable way to sample local vintages without needing a car. Aitkenās Folly Vineyard is another solid choice, known for its relaxed atmosphere and quality wines that showcase the regionās cool-climate growing conditions.
If beer is more your thing, Wanaka has you covered there, too. Rhyme X Reason Brewery and Ground Up Brewing sit right next to each other, making it easy to try a few different styles without much effort. From crisp lagers to hoppier pours, both spots are casual, welcoming, and perfect for an easy afternoon stop.
Whether you lean toward wine or beer, Wanakaās drink scene is all about quality, scenery, and taking your time, which fits the townās vibe perfectly. And if youāre driving down to Queenstown, itās well worth stopping by Cardrona Distillery along the way to pick up a bottle for laterāone final local taste to round out your Wanaka stay.
7. Explore Mou Waho Island
Tour Details
Most people come to Wanaka to admire Lake Wanaka from the shore, but this small-group water taxi tour to Mou Waho Island lets you experience it in a completely different way. Itās quiet, a little unexpected, and one of those experiences that feels like youāve stumbled onto something special.
The trip begins at Wanaka Marina, where you hop aboard a water taxi and head out across the lake. The ride itself is a highlight. As you cruise past sheer cliffs and smaller islands, your skipper chats about the mountains, glaciers, and history of the area, all while the Southern Alps rise dramatically around you. Itās the kind of journey where youāll want your camera out the entire time.
Once you arrive on Mou Waho Island, youāre free to explore at your own pace for about 90 minutes. A short but steady uphill walk takes you to the islandās most memorable feature, the Arethusa Poolāa lake sitting high above Lake Wanaka. The views from the top are incredible, with wide-open panoramas over the lake and surrounding peaks. And because the island is a protected nature reserve, youāll likely spot native wildlife along the way, including the curious weka and, if youāre lucky, the Southern Alps gecko.
Between the limited departures and small group sizes, this tour often fills up quickly, so itās worth booking ahead if itās on your radar.
8. Raft down the Matukituki River
Tour Details
If youāre an adrenaline seeker like I am, youāll love this full-day rafting tour. Not only is it a thrilling few hours, but it also lets you get into Wanakaās backcountry that most travelers miss! Itās equal parts fun, scenic, and just different from your typical tour.
Youāll meet your guides and fellow adventurers in downtown Wanaka and hop on a shuttle to the launch point at the mighty Matukituki River. If youāve never rafted before – no worries! The guides are amazing and ensure you feel comfortable with the basics before hitting the water. These packrafts are cool because they are small, lightweight, and only fit two people, so itās different from your average rafting experience.
Once youāre in, you can enjoy clear river water, wide open valleys, and big mountain views that make you want to stop and take the scenery in for a while.
While this is a full-day tour, you wonāt spend all of your hours riding eddies, wave trains, and white water. There are chances to stop and enjoy Mount Aspiring National Park, and take a break to enjoy a picnic lunch mid-day.
This experience is available from October through April, otherwise itās too cold to raft – trust me! And if you need more convincing, you can check out the dozens of 5-star reviews here!
9. Drive the Crown Range and see the Cardrona Bras
If youāre renting a car in New Zealand, driving the Crown Range Road is one of those classic experiences you donāt want to skip. Connecting Queenstown and Wanaka, this is the highest main road in the country, and the journey is just as memorable as the destination. Expect narrow twists, steep climbs, and some of the best scenery youāll see from behind the wheel.
There are plenty of reasons to take your time on this drive. One of the most popular stops is Arrow Junction Lookout, located partway up the hill after turning off near Lake Hayes in Queenstown. From here, youāll get sweeping views over Arrowtown and Lake Hayes, making it an easy first photo stop. At the very top of the pass, another viewpoint marks the Crown Range Summit. Park here and take the short walk along the ridgeline for an even better look down into the surrounding valleys.
Not far from the summit, youāll also pass one of New Zealandās quirkiest roadside attractions: the Cardrona Bras. Hung on a fence near Cardrona, this ever-growing collection of bras has become an unexpected local icon and a quick, amusing stop along the way.
To make the most of this scenic route, having your own wheels is key. If you still need one, you can compare prices and find a good deal on a rental car at Discover Cars. Just note that in winter, snow chains are essential, and you should always check on the Crown Range road conditions before setting off.
10. Go skydiving
Tour Details
If thereās one experience that truly puts Wanaka into perspective, itās seeing it from thousands of feet above the ground. This tandem skydive over Wanaka is equal parts adrenaline rush and scenic flight, making it a once-in-a-lifetime experience whether itās your first jump or your tenth.
Your adventure begins at the drop zone at Wanaka Airport, just a 10-minute drive from town. After a full safety briefing and getting geared up, youāll meet your certified Tandem Master, aka your partner for the entire jump. From there, itās time to board the plane for a scenic 20-minute flight to altitude.
As you climb higher, your guide points out landmarks below, including Lake Wanaka, the Southern Alps, Mount Aspiring, and the winding Clutha River. On clear days, you can even spot multiple lakes stretching out in every direction.
Once you reach jump height, the door opens, and the real thrill begins. Youāll free-fall for up to 60 seconds, reaching speeds of around 200 kilometers per hour (125 miles per hour). Itās fast, exhilarating, and surprisingly smoothāmore like flying than falling. When the parachute opens, everything slows down, giving you time to soak in the views as you glide gently back to earth.
Back on the ground, thereās time to celebrate while your photos and video are preparedāproof that you really did just skydive over one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand.
Why I Book Tours with Viator
Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! We almost always book our tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:
11. Try out jetskiing
Tour Details
If you want to experience Lake Wanaka from a completely different angle, this guided jet ski tour delivers both speed and scenery in equal measure. Itās the kind of adventure that combines adrenaline with sightseeing, letting you cover far more of the lake than you ever could from the shore.
Youāll kick things off with a short safety briefing, then head straight out onto the lake on sleek jet skis. Your guide leads the way through calm bays and around islands that are usually only seen from afar, and with small group sizes, thereās plenty of space to ride comfortably.
What makes this tour especially fun is the balance between freedom and guidance. Youāll have plenty of opportunities to open up the throttle and enjoy the thrill of riding across open water, but the pace is always comfortable and tailored to the group. Along the way, your guide points out features of the surrounding alpine landscape and shares insights about the lakeās ecosystem, adding depth to the adventure without slowing it down.
From crystal-clear water and mountain reflections to the rush of carving across the lakeās surface, this jet ski tour is equal parts exciting and scenic. If youāre looking for a fresh way to experience Wanakaās iconic lake, this one is hard to beat.
12. Go skiing at New Zealandās best ski field
If youāre visiting Wanaka in winter, spending a day at Cardrona Ski Resort is one of the most popular things to do. In fact, Cardrona welcomes more skiers each year than any other ski field in New Zealand, and itās easy to see why. The mountain is especially well-suited to beginners thanks to its wide, open runs, but thereās plenty here to keep intermediate and advanced skiers entertained too.
Cardrona is well set up with a gondola and high-speed quad chairlifts that access a mix of green, blue, and black runs. Just be aware that during Australian and New Zealand school holidays, particularly from late June to early July, the resort can get very busy. Another thing to note is that much of the snow here is machine-made, which is fairly standard in New Zealand but can feel different if youāre used to skiing in places like North America or Europe.
For families, Cardrona really shines. The ski school program has a great reputation, and there are childcare facilities on the mountain if you want a few child-free laps. Getting there does require a drive up a winding gravel road, so take it slow, especially after fresh snow. If youād rather not drive, shuttle buses run from both Wanaka and Queenstown, making it an easy and stress-free option.
And if you really love skiing in Wanaka, youāre in luck. Treble Cone, Snow Farm, and Soho Basin are all within about 40 minutes of town, giving Wanaka one of the best winter playgrounds in the country.
13. Fly to Milford Sound for a day
Tour Details
Milford Sound is one of those places that feels impossibly remote, but this flight-and-cruise experience makes seeing it from Wanaka surprisingly easy. Instead of spending long hours driving winding roads, this half-day adventure lets you experience the very best of Fiordland from both the air and the water.
Youāll meet at Wanaka Airport and hop into a small plane, and honestly, the flight alone would be worth it. Over the next 45 minutes, youāll fly above alpine lakes, braided rivers, glaciers, and rugged mountain ranges as your pilot chats through the highlights below, from the Clutha River and Lake Wanaka to icy peaks and waterfalls in the Southern Alps. By the time you reach the west coast, the scenery shifts once again, and suddenly Milford Sound appears beneath youādramatic, remote, and every bit as impressive as youād expect.
Once you land in Milford Sound, youāll jump straight onto a scenic boat cruise that glides past towering cliffs and waterfalls pouring into the fiord. Seals are often spotted lounging on the rocks, and if youāre lucky, dolphins or penguins may appear along the way. With tea and coffee served onboard, itās easy to relax, step out on deck, and take in just how wild and remote this place feels.
The return flight to Wanaka follows a different route, offering even more incredible scenery before you land back where you started. With morning and afternoon departures available, this unforgettable Milford Sound experience fits easily into your Wanaka itinerary without taking over your entire day.
14. Enjoy a happy hour cruise on Lake Wanaka
Tour Details
If youāre looking for the perfect way to wind down in Wanaka, this late-afternoon happy hour cruise on Lake Wanaka is hard to beat. Itās relaxed, scenic, and just indulgent enough to feel like a treat without taking over your evening.
The cruise departs from the Wanaka lakefront just before sunset, making it an easy pre-dinner plan. Once on board, youāll be handed a complimentary drink along with cheese and crackers to snack on as the boat glides out onto the water. With the Southern Alps glowing in the late-day light, itās one of those moments where youāll instinctively reach for your camera, drink in hand.
As you cruise across the lake, youāll pass familiar local landmarks like Ruby Island, Stevensons Peninsula, and Eeley Point, along with the famous Lone Tree growing right out of the water. The atmosphere onboard is casual and social, with a fully licensed bar available if you feel like grabbing another drink. Thereās no rush, no itinerary to follow, just plenty of time to relax and enjoy the views from the water.
What makes this cruise especially appealing is how easy it is to fit into your plans. Youāre back on shore in time for dinner, feeling refreshed rather than rushed. Whether youāre traveling as a couple, with friends, or just want a mellow way to end the day, this sunset cruise offers one of the most enjoyable ways to experience Lake Wanaka.
15. Test your skills at Puzzling World
If youāre looking for something a little different to break up all the outdoor adventures, Puzzling World is Wanakaās answer to weird, wonderful fun. Itās one of those places that appeals just as much to adults as it does to kids, and itās especially perfect on a rainy day or when you want a lighter activity.
Puzzling World has been around for more than 40 years and is instantly recognizable thanks to its famous Leaning and Tumbling Towers out front. Inside, things only get stranger. The Great Maze is a highlight and far more challenging than it looks, with about 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) of pathways that can easily take 30 minutes to an hour to escape. Trust me, itās not as easy as you think!
The illusion rooms are just as entertaining. The Ames Room is a classic mind-bender where youāll suddenly look giant on one side of the room and tiny on the other, thanks to forced-perspective techniques famously used in the Lord of the Rings films. The Tilted House is another standout and will have you questioning your balance almost immediately.
Before you leave, donāt miss the Roman-style public toilets, which somehow manage to be just as entertaining as the attractions themselves. Puzzling World is open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm, and you can expect to pay around $32.50 NZD for the Adult Combo Deal ($23.50 for children), which offers the best value. Individual activities are also available, typically ranging from $18 to $26.50 NZD, and children under 5 are free, making it an affordable and fun addition to your Wanaka itinerary.
Where to Stay in Wanaka
Wanaka may be a small lakeside town, but when it comes to accommodation, youāre spoiled for choice. From budget-friendly motels to apartment-style stays and resort-style hotels, thereās something here for every type of traveler. While Wanaka is generally more affordable than nearby Queenstown, the best places still tend to book up quickly, especially during peak seasons. So, if you see availability that works for your dates, itās a good idea to lock it in early so you donāt miss out.
Club Wyndham Wanaka ā $$$
If youāre visiting Wanaka to relax and spoil yourself, then thereās no question that you should stay at Club Wyndham! This hotel is located right in town, only minutes from Lake Wanaka, and features an outdoor heated pool, waterslide, hot tub, sauna, and an on-site bar and cafĆ©.
All rooms here come with a kitchenette or full kitchen, and many also offer lake views. Youāll also have access to their fitness center, too, if you fancy working up a sweat before hitting the sauna! Rooms at Club Wyndham start at around $300 NZD and can be booked here on Booking.com.
Archway Motel & Chalets ā $$
When I travel, I often like to stay in apartment-style hotels so that I can cook my own meals. The Archway Motels & Chalets offers studio apartments, one-bedroom apartments, and two and three-bedroom apartments for really reasonable prices! These are great for families or people traveling in groups (I stayed here last time I traveled with friends).
The motel is located only a short drive from town in a peaceful area ā talk about holiday bliss! Room rates start at around $240 NZD per night, averaging around $350 NZD in the high season. You can check availability and book your stay online on Booking.com here.

Renting a Car, Campervan, or Motorhome in New Zealand
Let’s face it, you’re going to need wheels to get around New Zealand. Although a small country, buses between destinations are infrequent and expensive. Plus, some of the best experiences you can have in NZ are on road trips!
You have three options when it comes to getting wheels in New Zealand: a car, a campervan, or a motorhome. Here’s what you need to know about each and where to get them:
Car
A normal car is the cheapest rental vehicle you can get in New Zealand. It’ll get you around to all of the best destinations with ease. The only downside to a car is that you will need to stay in hotels or Airbnbs during your travels (no camping, unless you buy a tent!). My favorite place to rent a car in New Zealand is Snap Rentals. They are a local company that offers affordable and high-quality rental vehicles across the country. Plus, I have an exclusive discount that gets you 10% off when you book through this link or use the code MQD10 at checkout! And if you can’t find what you’re looking for on Snap Rentals, check out Discover Cars, where you can compare cars and prices across many different companies.
Campervan
A Campervan is a large van that has a bed and a small kitchen in the back. It’s what most budget travelers use for traveling around New Zealand since it allows you to camp comfortably and for free (most) nights. Campervans are best for couples or solo travelers who are happy to live in a small space. You should also love the outdoors and camping…and be prepared for an adventure of a lifetime! My favorite campervan rental company is JUCY because they have a huge selection of campervans to choose from, plus multiple pick-up/drop-off locations. You can browse JUCY’s campervan selection online here. Alternatively, you can easily compare all campervans available in NZ on Motorhome Republic here.
Motorhome
A motorhome is larger and more comfortable than a campervan. Many motorhomes will comfortably sleep 6 or more people – perfect for a family visiting New Zealand. Motorhomes are the most expensive option, but with one, you won’t ever need to stay in a hotel, and you’ll save money that way. My top choice for a motorhome company is Star RV because they have beautiful motorhomes at affordable prices. You can check prices and availability for Star RV motorhomes online here. Alternatively, you can use Motorhome Republic to search all motorhomes in NZ. For more detailed info, read my complete guide to renting a motorhome in New Zealand!
EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNT CODE: I’ve organized a special discount code that will get you up to 10% off if you book your campervan or motorhome through JUCY or Star RV! Simply click here to select your JUCY campervan, or click here to select your Star RV motorhome, and then use the code DTRAVELQ4 between now and December 31st to get 10% off. Or, if you book after December 31st use the code DTRAVEL25 at checkout to get 5% off – it’s that easy!
Note: For the 10% discount code, your travel dates can be anytime from November 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026, but thereās a blackout period for both discount codes from December 15, 2025, to February 2, 2026. Unfortunately, JUCY wonāt allow ANY discounts during their busiest weeks ā trust me, I tried!
AIRALO e-SIM Up To 15% Off With Code “DTRAVEL15”
Whatās an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country youāre visiting ā no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.
In simple terms, itās the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.
Weāve tested a bunch of eSIMs in North America, and after a few frustrating experiences, weāve found our favorite ā Airalo. Itās fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
