Why Rent a Motorhome in Auckland

Located on the North Island, Auckland is a popular place to start and end your road trip in New Zealand. Its central location is the perfect starting point for visiting beautiful destinations around the country.
There are also many companies that rent motorhomes in Auckland – so you have plenty of choices! You sure;y will be able to find a motorhome with all the space and amenities you’re looking for.
While motorhomes are more expensive than campervans (much smaller than motorhomes than typically only sleep 2 people), they guarantee the utmost comfort while traveling and are perfect for freedom camping.
Freedom camping has been allowed throughout New Zealand for hundreds of years but only to vehicles that are self-contained certified. If this is what you plan on doing, it’s important to keep this in mind when choosing your motorhome below.
Hot Tip: If you are on a smaller budget and traveling along or just with one other person, consider renting a campervan in Auckland instead. They are smaller and less luxurious but also cheaper than motorhomes.
Important Factors to Consider before Renting a Motorhome in Auckland

Is your Motorhome self-contained certified?
As mentioned above, self-contained-certified motorhomes let you camp for free in certain areas throughout New Zealand. This helps you travel the country without going beyond your budget.
If you’re not familiar with a self-contained certified motorhome, well, it’s a vehicle designed to meet the sanitary and ablutionary needs of the occupants. This means it can deal with all types of waste and features tanks with water for drinking and cooking that can last for a minimum of three days.
A self-contained motorhome will allow you to camp for free in certain places!
Almost all motorhomes are self-contained certified, but just be sure this is true with your chosen motorhome rental by asking the rental company for the certificate location or sticker on the vehicle.
How many people are you traveling with?
Most companies provide various options to groups of travelers. A cheap motorhome rental in Auckland is ideal for only two people. Larger and more expensive motorhomes can sleep four or six people.
So when choosing which one to rent, it’s best to have the final number of people traveling with you in order to avoid complications on the day of the pick-up. And before you decide on how many will fit in one bed, you should first make sure there are enough seatbelts for everyone.
What is your drop-off location?
End-point locations are something not all Auckland motorhome rental companies have in common. If you aren’t also ending your road trip in Auckland, then you should verify what drop-off locations your chosen motorhome rental company has. That’s right, you can’t just drop off your motorhome anywhere!
It’s better to choose where your adventure will end before you begin your trip. This will prevent you from having to drop off your motorhome in an unwanted place or paying hefty relocation fees.

Where to go with your Motorhome in Auckland?

There are so many amazing road trips you can begin from Auckland! There are so many that you’ll find it hard to choose just one! Below I’ve listed a few of my personal favorites with some information as well as links to my detailed blogs about the places so that you can easily choose a couple.
- Drive from Auckland to Paihia – this short-ish drive is a great way to explore the stunning beaches of Northland like Whale Bay, Sandy Bay, and Matapouri in Tutukaka. The drive is 230 kilometers (124 miles) and will take you 3 hours and 15 minutes without stops. But I highly recommend allowing a full day for this road trip. Also, be sure to stop at the quirky Waipu Caves to see the glow worms that NZ is famous for!
- Road trip to Tauranga from Auckland – another short drive is this road trip from Auckland to Tauranga, which will take 2 hours and 40 minutes without stops (211 km / 131 miles). I don’t recommend stopping too often along the way except for at Mount Maunganui and McLaren Falls Park. When you get to the coastal city of Tauranga, you’ll find there are lots to do here, from exploring beaches, hiking, dolphin watching, or joining a very cool glow worm kayaking tour!
- Drive from Auckland to Rotorua – this city is a hotbed for geothermal activity and is one of the most popular places to visit on the North Island. Rotorua is 227 km (141 miles) from Auckland, and the drive (without stops) will take approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. To be honest, there’s nothing a lot to see along the way except for the city of Hamilton or Waitomo Caves. Instead, save the hours for Rotorua, where you can visit the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, go white water rafting, learn about Maori history at Te Puia, and so much more!
- Auckland to Taupo road trip – Taupo is home to one of the best ski resorts on the North Island – Mount Ruapehu and Lake Taupo, which the town is built around, is the largest lake in the country! As you can guess, many of the best activities in Taupo involve the huge lake, from checking out Maori rock carvings to SUP’ing; as well as that, you can head to the nearby Waikato River, where you can get the adrenalin-pumping on a white water rafting tour. Taupo is 273 km (170 miles) from Auckland and will take 3 hours and 20 minutes without stops.
- Auckland to the Coromandel Peninsula – this popular road trip from Auckland is on most tourists to New Zealand’s bucket list – that’s because the famed Cathedral Cove is located here and was featured in the Chronicles of Narnia movies. As well as that, there’s the famed Hot Water Beach, and even the opportunity to kayak to a remote island. The drive to Coromandel from Auckland is 168 km (104 miles) and will take 2 hours and 20 minutes without stops!
